Job Seekers - Things You Should Know When

Submitting Your Resume Via Email

When submitting your resume electronically, here are some tips you may find helpful:

1.      ALWAYS include your email address (along with your name, address and phone number) in the body of your resume. This is one of the primary ways an employer will try to contact you.  If your resume is sent as an attachment to an email, your email address may be lost.

2.      If you do not qualify for a current opening many employers save your resume for future reference.  Resumes are sometimes saved in a "plain text format" which means any special formatting you may have in the resume will be lost.  If you place any contact information in the "header" or "footer" of a word processing document it may be lost when converted to plain text.

3.      It's a good idea to include a copy of your resume in plain text in the body of the email if you are also sending it as an attachment.  People are concerned about opening attachments because of viruses, and your word processing program may not be compatible with the recipient's software.  This way you are assured that your background, qualifications and contact information will be seen.

4.      Be sure to include "keywords" in your resume that you think employers will be looking for such as special software skills, job titles/functions, special association or interest groups, etc.  Keywords can be listed as a separate line on your resume.  Resumes filed electronically are scanned or searched for keywords.

5.      Remember your resume is supposed to "get you an interview" where you can get into more details about your experience - so keep it as brief as possible.

6.      It is also helpful to include information such as:

·         The position you are applying for (helpful when a company has multiple job openings)

·         Why you are interested in the position

·         Desired salary range

·         If you are willing to relocate yourself in case the employer does not provide relocation assistance

We hope these tips will help assure your resume is seen by employers when trying to fill a position that may interest you!  Also, check out our current job openings to see if anything interests you.
