Our
Way of Cutting the High Cost of Recruiting
in Today's Market |
In our monthly bulletins we have discussed dramatic changes in the
Human Resource Market. As part of your feedback, many of you have told us that personnel
services you've hired to recruit for your difficult-to-fill, specialized positions are
charging up to one-third of the annual salary plus substantial non-refundable retainers.
Over and over I'm asked: Why are these fees so high, and why do they vary so much from
job to job and from firm to firm?
Let's begin with the observation that there is no set industry-wide pattern for
establishing fees. Recruitment firms work from a variety of formulas and base their fees
on a number of factors that include:
- A fee scale that escalates according to the salary of the position to be filled.
- A fee scale that depends upon the qualifications and experience of the candidate.
- An arbitrary, widely varying definition of professional vs. non-professional positions.
- Whatever the market will bear.
Now let's move on to how we base our
fees. Our way of charging is unique in that you participate up front. We believe there is no
single best way to recruit effectively for all hires. When we work with you, we take
the time to understand your goals, budget, and time frame so we can suggest a
recruitment package that effectively meets the challenges of today's market and fits your
particular situation.
When you hire one of our candidates, we follow-up with both you and the candidate
within the first month, since in many states you become liable for unemployment costs after
30 days. We also offer you a free, on or off-site follow-up interview to make sure
that everyone's expectations are being met. This support helps you maintain as smooth an
orientation process as possible.
It is our intent to support you throughout your recruiting, hiring and employee
start-up processes and with your ongoing training and development needs so that your new
employees perform their best and make "your way of doing business" more
effective.
